How Often Should You See a Personal Trainer?

This is a great question and one that we hear about often.

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “How often should I see a personal trainer?”—you’re not alone. The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all because it depends on three main factors: goals, motivation, and budget. At PMF, we understand that every individual has unique needs, which is why we tailor our personal training programs to fit your lifestyle, budget and help you achieve incredible results.

1. Your Goals

Your fitness goals are a key determinant in how often you should meet with a personal trainer.

  • Big Goals, Consistent Effort: If you’re training for a challenging event like a marathon or triathlon, you’ll likely benefit from meeting your trainer at least three times a week to ensure your program is dialed in for peak performance.
  • Lifestyle Changes: If your goal is long-term health improvement, like building strength, improving mobility, or losing weight, two to three sessions per week can provide the structure and accountability needed to make steady progress.

At Positive Movement Fitness, we take the time to understand your goals, whether they involve conquering an Ironman or simply being able to keep up with your kids or grandkids.

2. Your Motivation

Let’s face it: accountability plays a big role in consistency.

  • High Motivation: If you’re naturally self-driven, you might only need to check in with a trainer once a week to keep your form, plan and progress on track.
  • Needing Extra Support: If you’re struggling to get started or maintain momentum, more frequent sessions can help you build confidence and consistency in your routine. Imagine someone who’s never worked out and is 50 years old. This is someone who could use help in establishing a routine with a great program and safe movement fundamentals.

Whether you’re a parent juggling a hectic schedule or a retiree focused on staying active, we provide a supportive environment to keep you motivated and build momentum that will help you establish a well-engrained routine.

3. Your Budget

Investing in personal training is an investment in yourself, and we work hard to ensure our services fit a variety of budgets.

  • Flexible Options: We offer small group sessions, semi-private training, kinesiology and one-on-one coaching, with rates ranging from $30 to $120 per session.
  • Goal-Driven Training: Our programs focus on maximizing the time and money you invest by delivering results that matter to you. Your goals and results are very important to us.

What Does the Research Say?

Studies show that newer lifters benefit from about 10 sets per week per muscle group, with 7-8 reps per set. This typically equates to three training sessions per week—an ideal starting point for those looking to build muscle and strength. Depending on motivation, established routine, those sessions can be split in and outside the gym. It’s all depending on the client.

At Positive Movement Fitness, we build our programs around evidence-based principles while personalizing them for your unique needs. Whether it’s our 12-Week Body Transformation Program, semi-private personal training, or working one-on-one with our kinesiologist, you’ll find a plan that works for you.
