It’s not easy to start
Starting a new fitness routine — especially in a place you’ve never been before — can feel intimidating. For many people, walking into a gym for your first visit brings anxiety and uncertainty:
Where do I park?
What happens when I walk in?
Will I know what to do?
Will I feel out of place?
At Positive Movement Fitness, we’ve intentionally designed our space to feel like the opposite of intimidating.
From the Moment You Arrive

When you pull into our parking lot, you’ll find easy access and a relaxed environment surrounded by long-established local businesses that create a familiar, welcoming feel. (Gabriel’s Pizza, Hillary’s Cleaners, Euro Deli, OPTSC physio)
As you walk through our doors, you’ll immediately notice the natural light pouring through our large front windows. The space is bright, open, and calming — more boutique wellness studio than overwhelming commercial gym. It makes it much easier for your first visit.
Inside, you’ll see clean white walls, open turf space, and a thoughtfully designed layout that allows you to see from the front of the gym all the way to the back. On one side, you’ll notice our hand-painted Active Ottawa mural; on the other, our open training area that reflects the energy of the space.
And most importantly, you’ll be welcomed by friendly faces.
Whether it’s Shawn, Sarah, Jacob, Hady, or Tori or Dustin greeting you, our coaching team is here to make sure you feel comfortable, supported, and at ease from the moment you arrive.
And just so expectations are clear: Many of our clients are grateful to know that we serve so many first-time “gym goers” and that we’re not a super intimidating space to workout. We’ve often been referred to as “Non Bro Gym” Which is comforting to many of our clients dislike that environment for workouts.
What you’re far more likely to see are parents, busy professionals and active retirees building strength for the long haul.
Depending on when you come in, you’ll probably start seeing familiar faces — one of the things our members love most about Positive Movement Fitness. It’s the kind of place where people know your name, joke throughout the session, share common life experiences, hangout, cheer each other on, and where the community becomes part of what keeps you coming back.
What Happens During Your First Session?
Your first session is all about getting to know you.
We’ll begin with a simple health questionnaire and show you where to leave your belongings. From there, your coach will guide you to one of our warm-up stations — whether that’s the rower, bike, or SkiErg.
Next comes your movement assessment.
This isn’t about testing how “fit” you are. It’s about understanding how your body moves so we can build a program that works for your life.
We look at movement patterns, mobility, strength, and overall function to better understand what your body does well and where we can help.
Our philosophy is simple: fitness should help you live better.
That might mean:
- Picking up your grandchildren with ease
- Keeping up with your kids
- Having more daily energy
- Moving with less discomfort
- Building strength that supports real life
Most people come in with movements they already do well and others that need attention. During your first few sessions, our goal is to help you understand what muscles you should be feeling, how movement should feel, and how to connect with your body more intentionally.
Your first session also gives your coach the information they need to build a program specifically for you.

A Partnership, Not Just a Workout
Training at Positive Movement Fitness is a partnership.
Your coach will check in regularly, ask how movements feel, adjust intensity when needed, and make sure each session meets you where you are.
We use tools like RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) to ensure your training is challenging enough to create progress without becoming overwhelming.
This creates steady, sustainable results — not burnout.

The Culture Inside Positive Movement Fitness
Positive Movement Fitness is a space where people of all ages and experience levels belong.
We’re proud to be:
- Kid-friendly
- Senior-friendly
- Beginner-friendly
- Busy professional-friendly
And every now and then, you may even meet one of our four-legged visitors.
More than anything, we’ve built a community hub — a place where people feel supported, encouraged, and genuinely happy to walk through the doors.
If you’ve been thinking about starting your fitness journey but feel unsure about taking that first step, know this:
You do not need to “get in shape” before coming here.
You simply need to walk through the door.
We’ll take it from there.
